Siem Reap y los templos de Angkor

Nada más llegar nos fuimos directos a una guesthouse de la que teníamos un panfleto y tenian habitaciones compartidas por 1$, Garden Village Guesthouse. La habitación de 1$ eran colchones en el suelo con una mosquitera y un techo, sin paredes. En cualquier hueco que tenían echaban un colchón. Te ibas tropezando con colchones mientras caminabas. Nosotros vamos a lo más barato, pero no somos tan cutres... así que pedimos una habitación para 3 que son sólo 5$, eso nos lo podemos permitir!

When we arrived in Siem Reap we went to a guesthouse which we had a flyer with dorms for 1$, Garden Village Guesthouse. The dorm for 1$ was just mattress on the floor with a mosquito net, no walls. You could find a mattress in any small place of the house. While you walk around you see people sleeping... We used to take the cheapest, but in this case we didn't. So we took a triple room with shared bathroom for only 5$, we can afford that!

El plan en Siem Reap era, principalmente, visitar los templos de Angkor en un día. Llegamos en sábado, y el domingo y lunes lo dejamos para descansar y visitar la ciudad. En la guesthouse conocimos a un asturiano, Luis, que vive en Brighton. Nos fuimos con él a tomar una cerveza (por solo 0,35$!) y a cenar al restaurante Temple donde hacen todos los días a las 19.30 una sesión de baile Apsara, el baile tradicional de Camboya. Pasamos un buen rato viendo el espectáculo. Los bailarines se notan que son como estudiantes de danza pero tenían mucha gracia. Ese espectáculo en un teatro son 80$!

The plan in Siem Reap is, basically, visit the temples of Angkor in one day. We arrived on Saturday, and Sunday and Monday ww'll use it to rest and visit the city. At the guesthouse we met a guy from Asturias who lives in Brighton, Luis. We went with him to drink a beer (for only 0,35$!) and to have lunch in Temple restaurant, where there is a free show everynight at 19.30 of Apsara dance, the traditional Cambodian dance. We spent a good time watching the show. Dancers are novels, like students of dance or something like that. A show like that in the theatre costs abut 80$!

De cervecitas por 0,35$!

El domingo y el lunes no hicimos mucho más. Siem Reap nos sorprendió bastante, no esperábamos que fuese tan bonita! En el centro tienes el mercado, con restaurantes locales muy baratos. Cerca está Pub Street, el mismo nombre de la calle lo dice, una calle llena de pubs y restaurantes con oferta de cerveza a 0,50$ y algunos hasta 0,35$. Nada mal para pasar la tarde! Entre medio de las dos calles está Alley Street, una calle con un montón de encanto! Es peatonal y llama la atención sus locales cuidados con ventanas de colores.

Sunday and Monday was quiet. We liked Siem Reap, we didn't expect it was so beautiful! In the city center there is a market, with local restautant very cheap. Near you can find Pub Street, a street plenty of pubs and restaurants with happy hour of beers for 0,50$ or even 0,35$, a really good plan to spend the evening! In the middle of the two streets it is Alley Street, what a nice street! It is a walking street and its shops are really cool with coloured windows.

Alley Street

El lunes por la tarde nos fuimos a comprar la entrada a los templos. Existen tres tipos de entrada, la que te vale por un día (20$), la que te vale 3 días en el período de 1 semana (40$) y la que te vale para 7 días en el intervalo de 1 mes (60$). Son precios un poco exorbitados, así que decidimos coger el de un día y darnos la paliza desde las 5.00 am que abren hasta el cierre. Además, si la compras la tarde anterior después de las 4.30 pm ya puedes entrar aunque sea para ver el atardecer.

Monday at evening we went to buy the tickets to visit the temples. There are three kinds of passes, one-day pass (20$), a three-day pass to run over in a one-week period (40$) and a one-week passto last for a month (60$). It's quite expensive, so we decided to do it in one day, starting at 5 am when they opens till close. Besides, if you buy the pass after 4.30 pm you get a free sunset, as the ticket starts from the following day.

La taquilla se encuentra a mitad camino a los templos por la calle Charles de Graulle. Te hacen una foto y carnet que te pediran cada vez que entras a un templo de los importantes.

The checkpoint to buy the tickets is in the middle of the way to the temples in Charles de Graulle street. Passes includes a digital photo snapped at the entrance booth and it will requiered in all important temples.

Bayon, Angkor Thom

El lunes por la tarde aprovechamos para ver uno de los templos más importantes, Bayon, que se encuentra dentro del Angkor Thom. Un grupo de monos nos dieron la bienvenida al templo, que al ser las horas que eran, nos lo encontramos todo para nosotros solos!

El templo está formado por 54 torres de estilo gótico decoradas con más de 200 caras sonrientes, que te encuentras por todos los rincones.

On Monday we visited one of the most important temple, Bayon, which it is in the center of Angkor Thom. A group of monkeys given us a welcome to the temple. It was empty because the time so we were alone!

The temple is a collection of 54 Gothic-style towers decorated with 216 coldy smiling, and you cand find them everywhere.

Angkor Wat

Empezamos el día viendo el amanecer en el Angkor Wat. Bueno, miento, el amanecer lo vimos de camino a los templos y eso que nos habiamos levantado a las 4 de la mañana! Pero no puedes entrar hasta las 5, así que cuando entramos ya estaba el sol fuera. Aún así, el Angkor Wat impresiona de ver. Está considerado el monumento religioso más grande del mundo. Casi nada. Su nombre significa 'templo que es una ciudad'. Otro dato curioso del Angkor Wat es que está orientado al oeste, que dicen ser la dirección de la muerte, por lo que mucha gente piensa que en realidad se construyó como tumba en lugar de como templo.

Nos podíamos pasar toda la mañana solo en el Angkor Wat, pero habían muchos más templos esperandonos!

We begin the day enjoying the sunrise in the Angkor Wat. Well, actually we were cycling during the sunrise... We woke up at 4 am but the temples are closed till 5 am, so when we got in the sun was already out. But the Angkor Wat is breathtaking anyway. It's believed to be the largest religious building in the world. Its name means 'temple that is a city'. Another fact is that the temple is oriented towards west, the direction of the death, which a larfe number of scholars concludes that Angkor Wat must have existed primarily as a tomb.

We could spend all the morning in the Angkor Wat, but there are more temples waiting for us! 

Preah Khan

Decidimos hacer la ruta larga (26km) para poder ver más templos, así que nos dirigimos hacia el norte. Pasamos Bayon, hoy mucho más concurrido y sin monos, y nos plantamos en Preah Khan.

Un templo dónde te ibas encontrando paredes derruidas y árboles que han crecido entre las grietas de los muros. Muy chulo.

We decided to do the big circuit (26km) to see more temples, so we headed north. We passed Bayon, now much more crowed and no monkeys, and we stopped in Preah Khan. A temple where you were finding broken walls and trees that have grown up between the cracks pf the walls. Very cool.

Ta Som

Este es del estilo de Preah Khan, con muchas raices de árboles por las paredes y lo más espectacular, un árbol que ha crecido encima de la puerta trasera, deformándola. Seguramente en unos años, cientos de años, el árbol consiga destruir la puerta. Es un escenario impresionante.

This is a Preah Khan style temple, with many roots of trees along the walls and a tree that has grown over the back door, distorting it. Surely in a few years, hundreds of years, the tree gets to destroy the door. It's breathtaking scenery.

Eastern Baray

Continuando por el circuito grande nos encontramos con Eastern Baray. Un templo con una piedra mucho más rojiza, que nos recordaba a las ruinas de Ayuthaya. Un elefante en cada esquina de la base están vigilando el templo.

Continuing on the big circuit we find Eastern Baray. A temple with a much more reddish stone, which reminded us of the ruins of Ayuthaya. An elephant in every corner of the base are guarding the temple.

Pre Rup

Pre Rup es muy parecido al templo Eastern Baray. Su nombre significa 'torciendo el cuerpo' y hace referencia a un antiguo método de cremación donde se traza el contorno del cuerpo con ceniza, primero en una dirección y luego en la otra, lo que sugiere que el templo sirvió como crematorio en la época de Rajendravarman II.

Pre Rup is very similar to Eastern Baray. Its name means 'turning the body' and refers to an ancient method of cremation where the corpse's outline is traced in the cinders first in one direction and then in the other, suggesting that the temple served as a crematorium at the time of Rajendravarman II.

Ta Phrom

Este es de los templos más visitados y por lo tanto más concurrido. La selva lo ha absorbido de tal manera que crea un escenario salvaje que invita a ser explorado. Es normal que directores de cine lo hayan usado para rodar películas como Tomb Raider.

This is one of the most visited temples and therefore more crowded. The jungle has absorbed so wild that creates a scenario that invites exploration. It is normal that filmmakers have used it to make films like Tomb Raider.

A partir de aquí, ya teníamos los más importantes vistos. Simó se fue al hostal que no se encontraba bien y Rocío y yo nos fuimos a explorar. Dudabamos en dónde ver el atardecer, si en el Angkor Wat o en el Ta Prohm Kel, que es el que recomiendan en todos sitios. Al final, fuimos a este último, prontito para no pillar a mucha gente. Está encima de una pequeña colina, de ahí que lo recomienden para el atardecer. A las 4 de la tarde ya había gente, el atardecer sería sobre las 6,30. Estabamos muertas. Rocío se dormía sentada y las vistas tampoco eran para tanto, así que nos fuimos... Ya era hora de descansar que a lo tonto habíamos hecho 50km.

From here, we had already seen the most important temples. Simó went to the hostel because he didn't feel well and Rocio and I went exploring. Doubted where to watch the sunset, if in the Angkor Wat or the Ta Prohm Kel, which is the one recommended for all guides. At the end, we went to the Ta Prohm Kel, we went early to avoid the crowd. It is in the top of a small hill, hence it recommended for sunset. At 4 pm there were already lot of people, the sunset would be about 6.30. We were exhausted. Views were not so great, so we gone... It was time to rest that we cycled around 50km.

Y entre templo y templo, casi sin darnos cuenta, nos plantamos en los 3000km pedaleados!

And between temple and temple, almost without realizing it, we did our 3000km cycled!
